Rehoming Pets

The decision to rehome your pet is never easy.

Consider these options prior to giving your pet away:

How about sending your dog to doggy day care? Or getting a dog walker or pet sitter to come by while you are out?

Pets are mobile! Search for apartments or homes that allow pets or talk with potential landlords about putting down a pet deposit.

Give your pet a chance to adapt to the change in lifestyle. Just as you needed that same time to adapt. Your pet may surprise you with their happiness about the newest family member. The ASPCA has some recommendations that may assist with your transition.

Have you reached out to any local trainers to discuss the problem? Some issues are easily resolved with a few training tips.

There are several possible causes for this problem. Could your dog be bored and getting into mischief? Stuffed frozen Kongs or doggie games are a great way to mentally tire your dog out. A tired dog is a good dog!

While this may seen as counter intuitive, think about getting another dog. Giving your dog a companion while you are away can help with separation anxiety. Also, speak with your veterinarian about helping your dog's separation anxiety medically.

If you are faced with giving your pet away to ensure they are fed, the Friends of the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter Pet Pantry can help you stay together.

Allergies can affect everyone differently. Talk to your doctor about treatments and the use of air purifiers that remove allergens.

Check fences for weak spots or holes. Once a dog finds an escape route, they will continue to try to use it. Consider using a dog trolley system instead. Is your pet fixed? If not, this could be the reason they keep trying to leave the yard. Consider getting your pet spayed/neutered to alleviate the issue.
