Heartworm Prevention
What is heartworm?
Heartworm is a disease caused by worms that can grown up to a foot long and live in the heart and lungs. It is spread by a mosquito that bites an infected animal and then transfers it to other animals through its saliva. The adult heartworms can live for up to 5 to 7 years in an untreated dog.
Heartworm is a serious and potentially fatal disease for pets. Learn more about heartworm disease from the American Heartworm Society resource center.
How do I prevent it?
Easy, talk to your veterinarian! Your pet will be tested to ensure they do not have heartworm disease, and then your veterinarian can give you a year long prescription.
Prevention is affordable! Most heartworm prevention medications cost less than $10 a month. On the flip side, heartworm treatment can be quite expensive and hard on your pet both mentally and physically.
Heartworm is a community disease and on the rise in our area. The more pets on prevention, the safer all our pets will be.
